Changes to Polish citizenship matters – higher fees and longer deadlines

On 1 August 2025, new provisions of the Act of 25 June 2025 amending the Act on Repatriation and Certain Other Acts will come into effect.

These changes also apply to Polish citizenship procedures and include:

1. New stamp duty rates

New fees will apply starting in August depending on the type of case:

o   PLN 1,669 for the provincial governor to accept an application to the President of the Republic of Poland for granting citizenship or consenting to renunciation of citizenship;

o   PLN 1,000 for proceedings for recognition as a Polish citizen;

o   PLN 277 for proceedings to confirm citizenship or loss of citizenship.

Stamp duty will be payable regardless of the decision, including in the event of an unfavourable decision or discontinuation of proceedings.

Fees will be waived only for minors recognised as Polish citizens and for persons acquiring or confirming their Polish citizenship through repatriation.

2. Extension of deadlines for examining cases

The new provisions stipulate that cases concerning recognition as a Polish citizen, confirmation of citizenship, or loss of citizenship should be examined within six months. Importantly, this deadline also applies to cases that were initiated but not yet completed by 1 August 2025.

However, the practical implications of this new provision remain to be seen, given that the waiting time for decisions in such cases currently exceeds one year in some provincial offices.

These changes apply to all cases filed on or after 1 August 2025.
