Parliament adopts the law on changes to length of service

On Friday, 26 September, Parliament adopted the changes proposed by the Senate to amendments to the law on calculating length of service The changes were mainly technical. However, one of the changes introduced the principle that for overlapping periods counted towards length of service, the period that is most favourable to the employee is to be included in the length of service.

The amendment will bring major changes to the calculation of length of service. The periods that are to be counted towards length of service will include, among others:

  • operating a sole proprietorship,
  • suspension of a sole proprietorship to be able to take care of a child,
  • performance of civil law contracts (excluding a specific work contract),
  • documented performance of paid work abroad.

The law will now be sent to the president for signature. The effective date of the adopted changes is 1 January 2026, but the new provisions will not apply to private sector employers until six months after publication.
