Reinstatement of border controls at Poland's borders with Germany and Lithuania

From July 7, 2025, the Polish government has reinstated temporary border controls at the internal borders of the Schengen area with Germany and Lithuania. According to the authorities, the aim of this decision is to strengthen state security and prevent the uncontrolled flow of migrants.

The controls will apply to all travellers, both EU citizens and non-EU nationals. Persons crossing the border should have all required documents (i.e., passport, visa, residence card) with them and be prepared for possible border checks. The Border Guard will refuse entry to foreigners who do not have valid documents entitling them to enter Polish territory.

Although Poland declares its continued support for the principle of free movement of persons, the authorities emphasise that the controls may initially remain in place for a period of 30 days, with the possibility of extension, depending on further developments.
