The Ministry of Internal Affairs is proposing four grounds for acquiring Polish citizenship

On 27 October 2025, a debate entitled "Challenges and directions of change in the area of citizenship and repatriation" was held at the Ministry of Internal Affair’s headquarters. During the meeting, the planned draft changes to the rules for acquiring Polish citizenship, which the ministry is currently working on, were presented.

The new approach assumes that the process of acquiring citizenship will be based on four grounds:

  • length of stay in Poland – in some cases, it is planned to extend it
  • loyalty to the Polish state, confirmed by a statement from the person applying for citizenship
  • a citizenship test and knowledge of the Polish language at a level higher than the currently required B1 – these are intended to verify the degree of integration into Polish society, in particular knowledge of history, traditions and values
  • Polish tax residence.

The Ministry emphasises that the draft takes into account the proposals put forward by the President, which should prevent a possible veto of the future law. According to the Ministry's announcement, the proposed changes will be published on the Government Legislation Centre’s website in the coming weeks.
