Will the Social Security Institution pay for sick leave from day one?
There is an ongoing discussion about abolishing employers’ duty to pay sick pay for the first 14 or 33 days of sickness absence in a given year.
The Minister of Labour has confirmed that the Ministry is working on amending the rules regarding sickness benefits, so that the Social Security Institution (ZUS) will cover the costs from the first day. This is also confirmed by the objectives of the draft law, which aims to change the way ZUS issues medical leave certificates. According to the bill’s objectives, the intention is to facilitate the preparation of a reform of the system for paying sickness benefits.
This would provide a significant relief for employers. However, if this change were adopted, we could expect more rigorous checks on employees’ use of sick leave.
