The Ministry of Labour offers guidance on how to formulate gender-neutral job titles

In accordance with Article 18(3ca) § 3 of the Labour Code, as introduced last year, employers must ensure that job advertisements and job titles are gender-neutral. In a recent response to a parliamentary question, the Ministry of Labour indicated that, to meet the requirement for gender neutrality, one may, for example:

  • use compound forms (e.g. ‘female/male teacher’),
  • use job titles in one gender form (masculine or feminine), but with a note stating that both women and men may apply (e.g. ‘nurse K/M’),
  • state that a person is being sought for a particular role (e.g. ‘we are looking for a person for the position of welder’),
  • describe the nature of the work (e.g. “cleaning duties”).

The Ministry emphasised that the final choice of wording rests with the employer. Most importantly, the wording used cannot suggest that only a woman or man can be employed in a given role.
